Young, Beginning and Small Farmers/Ranchers (YBS)

Financing Agriculture From Generation to Generation

Great Plains Ag Credit is committed to meeting the needs of Young, Beginning and Small farmers/ranchers through a loan program that modifies certain financial standards from those in regular loan programs. Great Plains recognizes this segment of operators generally lack capitalization as compared to longer-term operators.

Staff resources and expertise are maximized for YBS borrowers. Great Plains uses governmental agencies and other sources of loan support as applicable to help supply the capital needs of YBS operations.

Seventy-five percent of Great Plains Ag Credit's total loans by number were to Young, Beginning, or Small farmers/ranchers as of June 30, 2008.

Great Plains Ag Credit actively supports various youth and young farmer/rancher programs through support or sponsorship of educational activities, events and other endeavors.

What is a Young, Beginning or Small farmer/rancher?

  • Young: Age 35 or younger
  • Beginning: 10 years or less in experience
  • Small: Less than $250,000 of gross agriculture income
